Lt. Commander Michael McCloud is on a stake out in Sudan when he meets under impressive circumstances CIA Undercover Operative Piper Roth and although she's very capable in the field, she seems to awaken his protective streak. Piper, on the other hand, tries to prove herself as a field agent and is deeply impressed by McCloud's effectiveness in the field. Soon they realize that the activities of the targets they are chasing are related but how? And what about the competitiveness between the different agencies? And what about the feelings for each other?I visited the author's site with the explanations regarding national security and thought to give this book a try. I thought that this part of the plot was clever and well elaborated and the twist regarding Piper's investigation added a special momentum to this thread of the plot. I liked that the two main characters met at eye level and how elegantly Mike and Piper dealt with gender prejudice regarding her career. It showed in a very simple way how these issues could be dealt with (up to a certain level) when logic prevails.
I absolutely loved the storyline, the hero/ine etc. until nearly towards the end of the book, when the hero/ine started the "contingency planning" (I know this sounds curious but how else could I put this without spoiling??!!). Then the book became too utopian and apocalyptic for my taste.
I also would've expected to find out what happens with Piper's career and especially, who El Noor is. Also, there seems to be a story behind Mike's sister and her husband, who seemed very well connected in the intelligence community but didn't come up with Piper's background information. Maybe I missed this (previous) book? Or is there a sequel to this book planned? If so, I didn't read that anywhere.....
Anyway, although the ending of the book was rewarding enough, I felt that it was a bit rushed and left some loose ends. In any case, this was a very good book and I did enjoy it!

Cindy Dees delivered a top-notch thriller that has just the right amount of romance to balance it out. Cindy Dees knows how to ramp up the stakes as Mike and Piper fight for their lives at every twist and turn of the story.
Superbly written.. A really good wake up call for what the terrorists could do to this country. A scene that hopefully never becomes a reality. I really enjoyed this novel and highly recommend it to anyone that enjoys an excellent story plot. The author keeps it spellbinding from start to finish…..Hobart S. Brew

To say the least I enjoyed this book greatly. It contained real people doing real things all while following a totally (unfortunately) believable story line. The author developed her characters in such a way I had no trouble believing that each would do the things they did and follow an unwavering path to completion of their assignment.
