The Dog Is My Shepherd Adventures in Love David E Fritsche 9781456332594 Books Reviews
This book is best read with a box of tissues close at hand. I laughed and I cried as I read this delighful book. It is so much more than just a collection of stories about dogs, it is a story of love at its best. If you can read this without shedding a tear, then you are obviously not a dog lover. I cannot recommend this book highly enough! Read it for yourself and I'm sure you will agree.
This is a book by a lifelong German Shepherd lover whose first dog was a descendant of Rin Tin Tin (for those of you who are old enough to remember Rinty!). If you have ever loved a dog...if you have ever lost a dog...this is the book for you. The author explores his relationship and adventures with all the German Shepherds he has loved for over half a century, starting when he was a young lad of only 15 years. If you have ever wondered how you can go on or how you can love another dog after you lose one, you need to read what the author says at the end of each chapter. He says good-bye to each dog in a way that only a true dog lover can. This is where you will need those tissues! This is a sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but always entertaining read for all dog lovers, no matter what breed you love. Terrific insight into the human/dog bond, by the author of the Barron's Dog Bible on German Shepherds.
I thought this was going to be just another "I love my dog" book. But it is oh so much more. It is about love, but so much more. It is about relationships and giving and receiving and helping and healing and growing. If you can read this book without shedding a few tears, you might want to have your eyes checked for dry eye syndrome. This is a great book for anyone, not only for dog lovers. It's a book that is good for the soul. Read it and weep!!
An outstanding book for German Shepherd owners particularly, but also for those who enjoy a spiritually uplifting and well written book.
Also a good book. I simply enjoy reading about dogs and dog training. Always come fast as I have a Fire and I love reading with it.
nice tales, this guy owned several GSD's in his life time but seems most all of them met with an unexpected death or untimely. Like to have heard some success stories from him
It was difficult to decide whether this book deserved 2 or 3 stars. I love German Shepherds, and opened this book with eager anticipation. The writing was good, the dogs were great, hence the 3 stars. The problem I had was with the number of completely preventable dog deaths through out the book. Dogs were run over, because they were off leash. A litter of puppies was killed because the author walked his aggressive and unpredictable dog off leash in the neighborhood; the dog ran into a neighbor's garage and killed an entire litter of puppies before anyone could stop him. A neighbor's dog was shot and killed because the author's wife went running every day, taking her dogs and other neighborhood dogs with her. An unstable home owner at the start of the trail had made it clear he did not like all the dogs running past his house, and finally fired a gun into the pack, killing one dog (not the author's). ALL of these deaths were completely preventable. They ALL could have been prevented by keeping the dogs on leash, or by respecting a home owner's wish for privacy, and choosing a different route to run (or by preventing other people's dogs from joining her). I wish I could meet with this author and slap him upside the head with a clue bucket; for someone with so many years of experience with this breed, who competed in shows with them, he was every bit a novice when it came to dog behavior.
Touching the way he writes of his discovery and move for his dogs throughout his life. Each fog filling special niches in his lire. The dog dedicated Beyond all belief . Great dog!
